A random pet peeve
Because I haven't watched the last ep of S3 Dr. Who yet, I'm being very paranoid about spoilers at the moment. And on a whole, everyone on my friendslist has been really good about spoiler cutting.

Sometimes though, we can be a bit too good.

It does absolutely no good whatsoever to say "spoilers behind the cut" if nowhere in the post do you indicate what show/book/fandom/whatthefuckever the spoilers are for.

Seriously, I seem to keep running into this more and more too. Random spoiler cuts with no indication before, during or after them as to what fandom the spoilers are for.

And, you know, YAY for spoiler cuts. Spoiler cuts are love. But when even the fandom is behind a cut? Not so useful anymore.

Hm. Don't know if this is directed at me or not but you could have just, you know. Told me. Or something.

I could hop off to edit but you've probably read it already and I'm sorry to have spoiled you.

Oh no, not you at all! Sorry it seems that way and you didn't spoil me, I actually didn't click your cut because I saw the who-ish icon and I'm pretty much just skimming past anything who-like looking on my flist right now. (And skimming in general, I am SO far behind it's not even funny.)

I really hope I didn't offend you. Honestly, this was not prompted by or aimed at any one post and I was trying to be clear about that. It really is something I've been seeing a lot lately. On my friendslist it can be easier to figure out what the cut is covering, "oh, this is such and such, it's probably fandom x" but when I'm looking for metafandom stuff it can be really confusing because I don't know the people as well and so can't even guess what fandom they might be discussing without clicking.

Cool. :) I wasn't offended, more like OMG! and wanting to bitchslap myself. It takes a lot to offend me... :)

I did change the cut, though. XD

I agree with you absolutely! All over my flist people have "DW spoiler cuts" but they don't say whether it's spoilers for the episode aired last week, or for next season, or what. I always skip these because they are ambiguous and I am paranoid about spoilers.

That being said... I always put spoiler cuts but I don't generally say they are spoilers, I say they are 'about such and such an episode' and then hope that readers will understand that I am putting a cut because it's going to be spoilers for that episode.

I've always wondered what sort of standard there should be for spoiler cuts - that is, how long after something has come out, should there be spoiler warnings/cuts.

Immediately after something has aired/been released, and the weeks surrounding it, I can certainly see the need. But in some cases - such as talking about television episodes aired ten years ago - cutting for spoilers seems a bit excessive to me, because at that point, everyone would have to cut everything media-related for fear of spoilers. (And yes, I have seen people use spoiler cuts for episodes of shows that have aired ten years ago).

So what's your view?

Just curious: I know I've posted spoilers where I indicated the episode name in the cut, but did not actually state the fandom. Is that also a problem, or do you/people in general recognize episode titles well enough across fandoms?

That was one of the (many) reasons I left scans_daily. People would cut for spoilers *constantly* without any indication at all what they were spoiling. It made the 5,000 s_d posts clogging my flist every day even more pointless and annoying.
